COMMON DOOR PROBLEMS

I Can’t Lock My Door

Your key will not come out of the door lock, your key is hard to turn or the door will not close properly, we are specialists in all types of door and door lock repairs. These include; Wooden Doors, UPVC Doors, Composite Doors, Patio Doors, French Doors, Metal and Aluminium Doors. There are many issues that you may experience when trying to lock your door.

Door not locking

If you are experiencing problems when trying to lock your door, you can try a few things to help narrow down the problem;

Firstly, when the door is in the open position try the key in the lock to see if the lock is working correctly, if the lock is working in the open position and not working in the closed position, this strongly indicates a door alignment issue. In most cases this is an easy fix by re-aligning the door or making adjustment to the locking points.

Secondly, if the lock is not working when the door is in the open position, try a spare key, if this does not work, your lock will more than likely need repairing or replaced.

Key Will Not Work

Is it the original key? Is it a newly cut key? If you are using the original key it is more than likely a problem with the lock. If you are using a newly cut key, it may not of been cut correctly.

Key Stuck In Lock

If you have your key stuck in a lock don’t use excessive force trying to remove it because you may snap the key in the lock. Call our lock experts to remove the key and save you the cost of a new lock.

Key Is Hard To Turn

If your key is hard to turn there is a problem with the lock or door alignment. Don’t apply to much pressure to the key or it may snap in the lock, try a spare key if you have one.

Snapped Key

Keys generally snap in locks because of too much pressure having been applied to them. Our lock experts can extract the broken key.

Faulty Lock

How do we get faulty locks? Mostly through ware & tear, using excessive force to unlock and lock locks when the locking points are misaligned, weather and using badly cut keys or the wrong keys.

Wooden Doors

Changes in weather conditions can cause your door or door frame to warp, resulting in the locking points not engaging with the keeps on the frame. In most cases this can be fixed by adjusting or repositioning the keeps.

Most common locks found on wooden doors

Nightlatch

A nightlatch is normally fitted to the upper half of the door and looks like a round disc from the outside which needs to be opened with a key. On the inside it is more of a chunky lock fitted to the back of the door and can be opened by turning a lever with your fingers. This type of lock locks automatically when you close the door.

Sashlocks and Deadbolts

These types of locks are mostly fitted in the door below the handle and need to be locked or opened with a key from either side of the door.

Multi-point-lock

This type of lock is commonly referred to as a strip lock or locking mechanism, most commonly found on UPVC doors and Composite doors, but also used on wooden doors. These locks run the full length of the door and when you lift the handle a combination of deadbolts and hooks will come out and engage into the frame.

UPVC/Composite Door Problems

Problems With UPVC Doors

The most common problem with UPVC doors is that they drop over time causing the locking points to misalign with the keeps on the frame. This will make the door difficult to lock or maybe not lock at all, for example, the handle will not go all the way up or the key will not fully turn in the lock. Most UPVC doors are adjustable making this an easy fix by making a few adjustments to re-align the door. It is important that this type of door problem is fixed before the lock or locking mechanism breaks which can end up being expensive.

UPVC Door Problems

Are you having problems locking your UPVC door? It so, when the UPVC door is in the open position check that the handle lifts up and the key turns in the lock, therefore, locking the door. If the door locks easy in the open position, this indicates that the locking mechanism is ok and the door will need re-aligning. If the door is not locking in the open position, there is a problem with the lock or mechanism usually requiring new parts.

Faulty Key Cylinder

If the euro cylinder has broken we can replace it quickly with a new lock and keys making your door safe and secure. You will not have to replace the full mechanism. This will ensure that the cost is kept to a minimum.

Faulty Mechanism

It is quite common for the full length mechanism to fail, UPVC door locking mechanism have a centre lockcase or commonly referred to as a gearbox, which in most cases they can be replaced saving the cost of replacing the full mechanism. This will keep the cost to a minimum as a full mechanism can be expensive.

Problems with Composite Doors

Composite door with problem

Composite door problems are very similar if not identical to that of UPVC doors. They drop over time causing the locking points to misalign with the keeps on the frame. Therefore, making the composite door difficult to lock or maybe not lock at all, for example, the handle will not go all the way up or the key will not fully turn in the lock. Most composite doors are adjustable making this an easy fix by making a few adjustments to re-align the door. It is important that this type of door problem is fixed before the lock or locking mechanism breaks which can end up being expensive.

Composite door problems

Are you having problems locking your composite door? It so, when the composite door is in the open position check that the handle lifts up and the key turns in the lock locking the door. If the door locks easy in the open position, this indicates that the locking mechanism is ok and the door will need re-aligning. If the door is not locking in the open position, there is a problem with the lock or mechanism usually requiring new parts.

Faulty Euro Cylinder
